Coverage: employer establishments in 18 sectors. Agriculture, public administration, nonemployers and certain other activities are excluded. A business with several locations may have several establishments.

Sales, shipments and revenue are gross receipts/output measures, not GDP or value added. Employment is for the pay period including March 12 of the selected year; it is not an annual average.

Reading these statistics

Census omits geographic/industry cells with fewer than three establishments. An unpublished row is not zero. This explorer does not reconstruct omitted values from totals.

Financial and employment values may be perturbed for confidentiality: G = less than 2% relative distortion, H = 2% to less than 8%, J = 8% or more. These noise grades are not confidence intervals or margins of error. Small rank differences may reflect noise. Establishment counts have no noise grade.

Imputation replaces missing or inconsistent responses. Published imputation grades describe ranges, not precise percentages. This is a census of covered employers, but nonsampling errors remain possible.

Each year uses its own NAICS industry classification and published MSA definitions. Names and codes can change meaning over time. Dollars are nominal, without inflation adjustment; these views are not a harmonized time series. Detailed industries can be incomplete and need not sum to a parent.
